Apple OS X Installation vs. Windows Installation

This issue of Blog Today will be all about my opinion of the difference between installing an operating system on a Mac and a PC. To start out, I know nothing about a Mac except for what I have learned in the last four days. Unfortunately it takes me a while to warm up to new things, so I’m just saying I don’t really like the Mac. Getting past the many times I had to create a new ID and password for the system, and finally the instructor had to come and set it for me, (not sure how he got it done but) I wasted many hours of productivity. With this being said, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty.

The Apple system seems to be better than PC in the sense that upgrading the OS requires one to open the Apple Store, find the system or app you want, and download it. With the PC, one has to either purchase the software from a retailer, or go online with Microsoft and purchase it. (Almost sounds the same as Mac). Mac OS is free to upgrade, and Windows 10 is now free for a limited time. The one thing which I found to my disliking is the fact that Apple is not very forgiving. Our textbook even says this in the first chapter. Now in the little mac’s defense, once I got it up and running, I found things that made me smile such as the little icons bouncing on the icon dash, and I started to remember when I had my first Mac many years ago.

I have pretty much maintained the feeling that I don’t like technology in any form, however, taking these courses has helped me know how to work these systems, and the dislike is slowly going away.

So let’s get going on the installation process.

  1. Installation of the Mac OS:

  • Back up all important files on an external disk.

  • Go to the App Store and download the OS

  • Doing a clean install will erase your hard drive

  • With a blank USB drive at least 8GB in size make a bootable disk for Yosemite

  • Load Yosemite on to your hard drive

  • Download the 5.16GB file called “Install OS X Yosemite” to your Applications file

  • Format the USB drive by opening up Disk Utility. It's in the Utilities folder in Applications.

  • Select your USB drive and click on the "Erase" tab. Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format type and keep the name as "untitled."

  • Click the Erase button. This will take a few minutes, but will erase your USB drive and format it with the proper file system.

Once the disk is bootable it is time to install Yosemite.

  • Restart your Mac and hold down the Option key immediately.

  • When your machine boots up, choose the USB drive that says "Install OS X Yosemite."

  • Select "Disk Utility" and then select your main hard drive.

  • Press "Erase" on the volume. Remember, this will erase EVERYTHING on your machine.

  • Go back to the main menu and choose "Install OS X."

  • Select your internal hard drive when prompted and continue with the installation.

After installing OS X Yosemite, you can start restoring your programs and settings using either a Time Machine backup or Migration Assistant.

  1. Installation of PC O/S: (clean install)

  • Turn on your PC, insert the DVD or USB flash drive, and then shut down your PC.

  • Restart your PC, and then press any key to boot from the DVD or USB flash drive.

If you restart your PC and your current version of Windows starts, you might have to open a boot menu or change the boot order in your PC's BIOS or UEFI settings so that your PC boots from the media. To open a boot menu or change the boot order, you'll typically need to press a combination of keys (such as F2, F12, Delete, or Esc) immediately after you turn on your PC. For instructions on changing the boot order for your PC, check the documentation that came with your PC or go to the manufacturer's website.

  • If changing the boot menu or order doesn't work, try again by signing into Windows, shutting down, and then starting your PC.

  • On the Install Windows page, enter your language and other preferences, and then select Next.

  • Select Install Windows.

  • On the Enter the product key to activate Windows page, enter your product key. The product key should be in a purchase confirmation email if you bought Windows 10. It looks like this: PRODUCT KEY: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX.

  • Note:

If you upgraded to Windows 10 on this PC by taking advantage of the free upgrade offer and successfully activated Windows 10 on this PC in the past, you won't have a Windows 10 product key, and you can skip the product key page by selecting the Skip button. Your PC will activate online automatically so long as the same edition of Windows 10 was successfully activated on this PC by using the free Windows 10 upgrade offer.

  • On the License terms page, if you accept the license terms, select I accept the license terms, and then select Next.

  • On the Which type of installation do you want? page, select Custom.

  • On the Where do you want to install Windows? page, select the partition that you want, select the formatting option you want to perform (if needed), and then follow the instructions.

  • When you've finished formatting, select Next.

  • Follow the rest of the setup instructions to finish installing Windows.
